He just stared at him…
And he nodded, with understanding.

“Wrong? Hey what do you…”
“Wrong, Jamie! I’ve seen you practice absolute nonsense for the past few weeks. So don’t get crook on me!”
Jamie’s father used to be kind of a superstar back in the day, having built a reputation for being one of the top scorers of his team. Certainly, being a son trying to live up to his legend always left him with a bitter taste.
“Well, that’s rich from someone who’s always telling me that practice makes perfect”. By this point, Jamie was on the verge of tears.
His father, always the calmer one, said coldly:
“Practicing the wrong thing makes you perfectly good at being useless, superstar. Hope that’s working out for you”
After that, a door was shut violently. Jamie had a temper after all.
The next morning, Jamie decided not to postpone his decision any longer. If he was not going to be considered for the team, he wanted to move on as quickly as possible.
“Hang up, superstar”
Jamie had just finished dialing his coach when his father peeked through the door. From Jamie’s perspective, he could see he was holding something in his hands.
“No. I’m done.” For him, it was decided after all.
“Hang up, and I’ll tell you why you suck at scoring”
Great. The day just kept getting better.
He found his father in the backyard, setting up a weird net around his soccer goal.
“What’s that?” Jamie asked.
“This is what not wasting your time looks like”.
Well, Jamie was not expecting it to look so...flexible.
“I don’t have time…”
“You’re absolutely right. Time is all you’ve been wasting lately. I’m helping you make the most of what you have left, you ingrate.”
Since he was a child, his father always seemed to be cold and distant with him, but today, there was something weird in his face. It almost resembled a smile.
“Ok, I’ll bite. What’s this all about?”
“It’s about teaching you the most important lesson yet, Jamie. Pros work smart, that’s why they’re pros. Losers only work hard. You’ve been acting like a loser lately”
Eight months after this dose of tough love was uttered by his father, Jamie had not only secured his place in the team, but he had just scored the defining goal of the season so far.
